The Upper Dolpo Trek is a journey deep into the mystical highlands of Nepal, where ancient Tibetan culture and dramatic Himalayan landscapes still thrive. Located in the remote Dolpa district, Upper Dolpo is a region of sacred mountains, crystal lakes, hidden valleys, and centuries-old gompas — a true Shangri-La preserved through time.
Legend says the great Guru Rinpoche discovered this “beyul” or hidden refuge over 1700 years ago. Once part of the Bon-po Zhangzhung Kingdom of Western Tibet, Upper Dolpo is now one of Nepal’s most culturally and geographically unique trekking regions. Tibetan yak herders, called Drokpas, have lived here for over a thousand years, keeping their ancient customs alive.
Our Upper Dolpo Trek itinerary is one of the most comprehensive. It covers the entire high country — from the iconic turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake to the legendary Shey Gompa and Crystal Mountain. You’ll cross high passes over 5000 meters, wander through windswept valleys, and encounter isolated Tibetan villages like Saldang, Tinje, and Chharka.
Your adventure begins with breathtaking flights along the Himalayan range to Juphal, skipping the busy town of Dunai and heading straight into the lush Suligad River Gorge. From there, the trail leads to Phoksundo Lake, where you’ll explore nearby Bon-po monasteries and lakeside villages.
As we enter Upper Dolpo, you’ll walk around Phoksundo and make a scenic ascent to sacred Shey Gompa, home to centuries-old Buddhist rituals. The trail continues to Shelri, Saldang, and the pilgrimage site of Crystal Mountain, offering the option to do a kora (circumambulation) or simply rest.
From Saldang, we move toward the remote Panzang Valley and fascinating villages like Shimen and Tinje, where locals still trade with Tibetan caravans. The trek concludes with a thrilling high pass crossing into Mustang, revealing spectacular views of Upper Mustang and a final descent into the Kali Gandaki Valley, where we fly out from Jomsom.
If you’re looking for a remote, culturally immersive, high-altitude trekking experience, the Upper Dolpo Trek is unlike anywhere else in Nepal or the Himalayas.
